Five Surprising Health Benefits of Frankincense Oil

Frankincense is known to be a substance worthy of kings and has been revered throughout the  centuries for its intoxicating scent and healing properties. Frankincense oil is made from the resin of the Olibanum tree (Boswellia) which is native to India, Africa, and Saudi Arabia.

Many people associate frankincense oil with religious ceremonies or perfumes, but there are many other ways to benefit from this fragrant and nourishing oil.

Provides Upper Respiratory Relief. Frankincense oil can help reduce upper respiratory symptoms caused by the common cold and bronchitis. Its antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties help to relax breathing passages and boost the immune system. Add a few drops to a bath, facial steam tent, or use as a massage oil for soothing relief. In addition to relieving the symptoms of a cold, frankincense oil can be used to disinfect a room.

Fights Wrinkles. Frankincense oil is cytophylactic which means that it helps protect existing cells and encourage new cell growth. Apply the mask to the skin; leave on for 15 minutes; rinse, and pat dry.

Heals Scars and Wounds. The same properties that make frankincense an anti-aging powerhouse also promotes the healing of wounds and scars. To reduce the appearance of scars, combine a few drops of frankincense oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, and massage the mixture into fresh or old scars. This remedy can also be used to promote wound healing.

Reduces Anxiety. Frankincense oil promotes deep breathing and relaxation, and it can be used to reduce anxiety. At the first signs of stress, add a few drops of frankincense oil to an oil burner or diffuser to disperse the scent throughout a room, or add a few drops to a bowl of water and inhale.

Improves Oral Health. The anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of frankincense oil can help relieve many common oral health problems such as bad breath, swollen gums, mouth sores, and toothache. Frankincense oil can be combined with water and other essential oils, such as myrrh or peppermint, to make an effective, therapeutic mouthwash. It can also be combined with baking soda to create an all-natural toothpaste.

Frankincense oil is a useful remedy for many common ailments and makes a great addition to any all-natural medicine cabinet. However, essential oils are powerful, so it's best to consult a doctor or a certified herbalist prior to using frankincense oil to treat illness. In addition, never use any essential oil undiluted on the skin. It should always be combined with a carrier oil such as grape seed, sweet almond, jojoba, or olive oils.
